The huge Amazon fulfillment center near Sacramento International Airport is up and running. The workers began filling orders for small products like electronics, books and toys on Wednesday.
The first item picked and packed was an eight set of Kona Coffee Serve Cups. The 855,000 foot facility is the largest industrial development in the Sacramento region in the last decade, and the most expensive project of any type other than the Golden 1 Center during that time according to the Sacramento Business Journal.
The fulfillment center, one of 11 in California, will eventually employ 1,500 workers.
Amazon also plans to open an air cargo operation at Sacramento International Airport. That project has already been approved by Sacramento County supervisors.
