Sierra ski resorts opening before Thanksgiving is a real boost for the local economy and welcome news for skiers.
Boreal Ridge was the first to open, Heavenly opened last weekend, and Kirkwood, Bear Valley, and Northstar are welcoming skiers this week.
Last ski season was one of the best after years of drought.
And this ski season looks poised to repeat with early snow allowing about a half dozen ski resorts to open early.
Kevin Cooper with Heavenly and Kirkwood Resorts says a combination of natural and manmade snow make for a great opening.
“Good conditions, it is early season, it is limited, but it’s all about these first 30 days on snow because that’s what important getting back your legs underneath you because hopefully January and February and March and April will be fantastic again this year,” Cooper said.
Cooper says the resorts are hiring now, and local businesses from restaurants to hotels should pick up as skiers head toward the mountains.
He adds it’s a good reason to be thankful this Thanksgiving.
“I’m thankful and I’m grateful just to see the weather come back,” Cooper said.
