Members of the Sacramento Police SWAT team had a different start to their morning on Wednesday. The department surprised officers with a mass shooting drill at the Golden 1 Center.
Sacramento Police Lieutenant Bryce Heinlein says, it was difficult to pull off, but the drill was kept secret from the officers.
"They were on their way to work, some were working out," Heinlein said. "They got the call and had to respond immediately."
The SWAT team practiced coordinating their response with arena security officers. Role players acted out the scenario and created distractions as officers tried to figure out the threat.
SWAT has drilled at the Golden 1 Center before, but this training encompassed the area around it, which has many new buildings, Heinlein says.
"That's why we train is we get to see those new areas," he said. "We need to go inside and see where our access points are and identify all those things before a situation ever arises."
About 30 Sacramento police officers participated.
