Cal Expo in Sacramento is preparing to host its first marijuana-focused event. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says it's being put on by the well-known High Times magazine.
"It's a Cannabis Cup event that will include elements such as music, speakers and competitions to judge cannabis strains and products," says Sorich. "It's scheduled for May, and while High Times has brought Cannabis Cup events to other places worldwide, this will be the first Cannabis Cup held in Sacramento."
High Times magazine says it chose Sacramento because it's the capital of California and has been a city at the forefront of the legalization cause...and because Cal Expo is one of the top fairgrounds in the state in terms of facilities and administration.
Out of Bounds Brewing Opens Folsom Spot
A new brewery and restaurant is just about ready for customers in Folsom. It’s from “Out of Bounds Brewing Company.” Sorich says it's in a spot once used for something a lot different than beer.
"This new craft kitchen and biergarten is in a Folsom Boulevard space that was previously occupied by a child care facility," says Sorich. "The space was converted into a plaza that includes the beer business and its restaurant, in addition to other businesses there."
The new Folsom site has a full restaurant, in addition to space for bocce ball and live music. It's scheduled to open Saturday. Out of Bounds Brewing Company debuted in Rocklin.
Track 7 Opens New Eatery
As the Sacramento beer business gets more competitive, some brewers are focusing more on food. Track 7 Brewing plans to open an eatery in East Sacramento this spring called The Other Side. Sorich says Track 7 recently posted an update with lots of new information about the project...
"...including the fact that its executive chef will be Oliver Ridgeway, who was previously the executive chef at Grange downtown," says Sorich. "He wants to go beyond traditional pub food at this new location, and rotisserie chicken is expected to be a big focus at The Other Side."
Ridgeway envisions a place where people can order the rotisserie chicken as a group meal, and it will be served with condiments and different flatbreads.
Dad's Kitchen Fills Old Cabana Winery Spot
A popular sandwich spot in Sacramento - Dad's Kitchen - is bringing a taproom and kitchen to a former winery space on Elvas Avenue in East Sacramento. Sorich says Dad's will replace Cabana Winery...which relocated to Lodi.
"This site will be a little different than the other Dad's locations in the area which are known for their sandwiches," says Sorich. "In addition to the kitchen and taproom, you can expect an outdoor beer garden with games like shuffleboard. It could open by the summer."
The new location will have up to 40 beer taps and a smoker to barbecue meats.
