Ridership on public transportation in Stockton has decreased over the years. But to encourage more passengers, the San Joaquin Regional Transit District is offering free bus rides this week.
The free rides come Thursday as part of the national Dump the Pump Day. The idea is to get folks out of their cars and onto the bus. Stockton buses usually see 12,000 passengers a day.
In Modesto, passengers will receive a pass for a future ride and giveaways at the downtown transit center.
In Merced County, Transit Director Artis Smith says Dump the Pump Day will be the beginning of free bus rides throughout the entire summer up to August 31.
Public transportation saves 4 billion gallons of gas each year and reduces the carbon footprint by 37 million metric tons of emissions, according to the American Public Transportation Association.
