Sacramento Regional Transit is switching to a new water-and-energy friendly train washer for its light rail system.
The new $1 million system in North Sacramento will clean the exteriors of the fleet's 97 cars each week, using 60 percent recycled water for the initial wash and 100 percent recycled for the final rinse.
"Every part of this washing machine and process is designed to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly," said Henry Li, SacRT's general manager.
The rinse water passes through a reverse osmosis system to treat it before it goes into the sewer. The new machine also has a more efficient drying component that helps keep spots off windows and mirrors, which RT says improves visibility for drivers.
