Fresno and Stockton's airports have been awarded major grants from the Federal Aviation Administration for upgrades.
Fresno Yosemite International Airport is receiving $10 million, and Stockton Metropolitan Airport is getting $7 million.
Stockton Airport Deputy Director Ronald Elliott says the money will be used to extend the taxiway and expand the airport terminal apron.
He says the hope is to attract more commercial passenger service.
“Right now, we’re losing about 5.5 million passengers annually out of our area here within a 25-mile range that fly out of other airports in the Bay Area or Sacramento,” he said. “If we have the expanded commercial service, they’d be able to stay local.”
Elliott says Stockton has only Allegiant Airlines offering commercial service to Las Vegas, San Diego and Phoenix.
