Outgoing California Gov. Jerry Brown and Gov.-Elect Gavin Newsom held a media availability on Tuesday after meeting in private at the state's Capitol. The two said they discussed a lot — but the deadly wildfires and the recent shooting in Thousand Oaks were on the top of their list.
Brown said the intensity of Northern California's Camp Fire and Southern California's Woolsey Fire are the "new abnormal" for California.
“The winds are faster, the temperatures are hotter, the soil and vegetation is drier,” Brown said. “This is unprecedented.”
The long-serving governor said he appreciates receiving much-needed resources from other states.
Meanwhile, Current Lt. Gov. Newsom said the transition to being the state's chief executive has been smooth despite the circumstances.
“This transition started off with, you know, [a] reality check,” Newsom said. “[The] shootings [and] obviously these fires. And that puts everything in perspective.”
Brown said he is confident Newsom will take California in a very positive and creative direction. Newsom has already appointed the Chief of Staff and Cabinet Secretary for his administration.
