In Stockton, people waited in the dead of night to be the first in line to take home a Thanksgiving dinner.
The Stockton Emergency Food Bank handed out food boxes for 2,000 families Sunday.
The line of people stretched around the block in the early morning hours. Many were experiencing hard times, including seniors, people with disabilities and the unemployed.
Food Bank Director Gillian Murphy said even those with jobs have it tough.
“If a person is earning minimum wage, what is it you can still afford?” she said. “Hopefully it will bring some joy at Thanksgiving.”
Dawn Fuhrman said her family of six wouldn’t have been able to celebrate without the help.
“I didn’t have any extra money to even buy anything for Thanksgiving,” she said. “And this is going to give us our Thanksgiving meal.”
More than a hundred volunteers pitched in to make sure no one left empty-handed.
