A police officer in Stanislaus County was shot and killed early Wednesday morning while making a traffic stop in the town of Newman, and a statewide manhunt is underway for the gunman.
Police Officer Ronil Singh had stopped a pickup truck in town just before 1 a.m. The 33-year-old officer contacted dispatch to report and just moments later called out on his radio “shots fired.”
Police and Stanislaus sheriff deputies responded soon afterward to give Singh emergency aid, but he didn’t survive.

The Stanislaus Sheriff Department has taken over the investigation and Deputy Tom Letras says surveillance footage from an earlier stop at a convenience store shows the suspect and his vehicle.
“The license plate on the vehicle were paper plates from a car dealership, so it’s really unknown at this point where the suspect is from,” Letras said.
He says the suspect vehicle was a gray or silver Dodge extended cab pickup and photos have been sent to law enforcement statewide.
