The Yuba County Sheriff's Department is providing more details about the Monday shooting death of a robbery and assault suspect by a deputy in the town of Linda.
The department says Jahmal Derrick Stewart was identified as a suspect in the assault and robbery of an elderly man on North Beale Road. A deputy says he first asked Stewart to show his hands and then attempted to put him in a control hold when Stewart failed to comply.
The department says witnesses reported the two wrestled and Stewart grabbed the deputy’s service weapon and fired it.
According to a media release, a second deputy arrived and heard the first deputy yell, “He's got my gun.” The department says the second deputy then shot Stewart multiple times.
The release says a safety component of deputies’ holsters prevents their weapons from firing while fully-holstered. Because of this, the department believes Stewart had control of the weapon.
The sheriff's department says Stewart was hit as many as five times. The exact number and location of the wounds will be released after an autopsy has been completed.
Investigators with the Sutter County District Attorney’s Office, the Yuba County D.A. and both counties’ law enforcement agencies had not concluded their initial interviews as of Tuesday evening, which is why details of the shooting were limited until now.
