Hours before Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Sacramento officials decided to postpone a controversial decision to ban certain items from protests.
But several dozen members of the public showed up at City Hall to discuss the proposed ordinance anyway, and some grew frustrated when they realized discussion would not happen.
After a couple hours, some members of the public got out of their seats and yelled — which is when council members abruptly ended the meeting.
City Manager Howard Chan had pulled the agenda item — which proposed banning dangerous items such as knives and pepper spray, and less obvious ones like pieces of wood larger than a certain size or glass bottles from demonstrations — less than an hour before the 5 p.m. meeting.
Chan wrote on Tuesday that staff was postponing discussion of the ordinance after questions from the community, including concerns that the ban would infringe upon protesters freedom of speech and religion.
A city committee is scheduled to discuss the ban in February.
