Streets surrounding more than 115 public, private, and charter schools in Sacramento will see their speed limits reduced starting this month.
Leslie Mancebo, a Sacramento transportation planner, says the law goes into effect with the installation of 15 mph speed limit signs, scheduled to begin next week.
"And, then we'll be installing them throughout the summer,” she said. “Ideally, we'll have all of these installed by the fall."
The law in California sets the limit for school zones at 25 mph, but gives cities the right to lower that to 15. Mancebo says Sacramento is the only city in the area that has chosen to take this step, and there are only a handful of cities statewide.
The new speed-limit restrictions are part of the city's Vision Zero plan, intended to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2027.
