I started covering the Sacramento region for Capital Public Radio in April 2011, and I have compiled some of my favorite photographic memories of the last decade. This is not a comprehensive list, but some things that have stood out to me when going through images in my multimedia archive.
Sacramento — Nov. 28, 2012
This was a fun weather photo I made a few blocks from where I was living at the time. There was a big storm that affected many people in Sacramento, and the winds that came before it emptied leaves into the streets and yards.
Sanger — Oct. 22, 2011
This was from my first documentary project I contributed to, "Dealing With Diabetes." I remember thinking about the contrast between the look of this home in Sanger, Calif. and the more sterile look of a dialysis center.
Arden-Arcade — Feb. 9, 2014
For a documentary about caregiving, we followed three families, including Rick and Marianne Rayburn, who were struggling through Marianne’s early onset dementia. Capturing this moment between them meant standing in the rain at just the right moment. I had closer images inside, but the window provides a distant feeling in an intimate moment that I think makes the picture interesting.
Sacramento — Sept. 23, 2013
Farm-to-Fork Week 2013 started off with a cattle drive over the Tower Bridge. I rode on the back of a truck to get images of the unusual event for downtown.
Sacramento — March 5, 2014
James Lee carries his son with cerebral palsy to the shower to bathe him. This photo stirred controversy over its portrayal of disability. The family did not object, though many on social media did. NPR published a response to the criticism.
Rancho Cordova — April 11, 2016
The Franchise Tax Board employs more than 5,000 people during tax season. In a photo essay, I tried to illustrate the scale and complexity of the operation.
Sacramento — March 4, 2019
The announcement of the Sacramento DA’s decision not to charge the police involved in killing Stephon Clark led to a series of protests, including one in East Sacramento that led to 84 arrests, including journalists and clergy, as the crowd was dispersing.
Sacramento — Jan 9, 2013
"Autism Grows Up" was a challenging documentary to work on, finding a way to visually represent the condition. The comment I kept hearing was that people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder are living in a different world. This moment just made sense to me given that feedback.
Sacramento — Jan. 19, 2019
The Women’s March in 2019 led to this frame of indigenous dancers. The juxtaposition of the Capitol and demonstrators summed up the feeling of the event, showing activism and policy.
Arden-Arcade — Oct. 26 2016
I spent the 2016-17 academic year at Encina High School in Arden-Arcade, and I truly enjoyed every story. The school has a legacy in the region for having a past of academic excellence, and a challenging present for the student population, many experiencing a myriad of obstacles. This frame was a particularly emotional moment between staff and a student.
Colusa County — Dec. 22, 2018
Gov. Jerry Brown retired to his ranch when his term was up, and he allowed Capital Public Radio to document his life there. Here he is pictured with his dog, Colusa as he was driving a cart, whipping around steep terrain with me in the backseat. It was hard to get his face from that position, so I used his mirror.
Rancho Cordova — Jun 30, 2015
This was a weather feature I shot on a very hot day in the region. This scene reminded me of growing up near the park in Rancho Cordova where this was shot.
Sacramento — Jan 7, 2019
Dutch Newsom wandered up to the podium where his father, Gov. Gavin Newsom, was delivering an inauguration speech. It was a dramatically different tone than I was used to covering at the Capitol.
Sacramento — April 17, 2013
This was potentially the Kings’ last game in Sacramento when the team was discussing leaving the city, and the fans showed up to say their goodbyes.
West Sacramento — Sept. 19, 2015
Chance the Rapper sprayed the audience with a water bottle at TBD Fest, a three-day music festival in Sacramento. It was a privilege to get to see so many musicians so close in three days.
Redding — July 27, 2018
The Carr Fire ripped through Redding in July 2018, destroying much of the city and its surroundings. These folks found their cats shortly after I arrived to their property. They carried them away through smoldering ground in sandals.
Davis — Dec. 21, 2015
Kara and Bernardo were living in Davis when I met them and their mixed status family for our documentary, “Calfornia Dream, Undocumented.” I spend a lot of time in kitchens, and this one has a very appealing energy.
