Starting this week, census takers will be knocking on your door if you haven’t responded to the census questionnaire — that amounts to 56 million households nationwide.
So far 63% of households have completed their questionnaires.
California’s response is almost 65%, while Sacramento County is at 70%, San Joaquin 64%, and Stanislaus about 65%. But in the foothills, the response has been much lower with Calaveras at 46%.
Laurie Slothower with Sacramento County said the county receives half a billion dollars annually in federal funding based on the census.
“We estimate that for every person not counted, that’s a loss of a thousand dollars per person per year for 10 years and this is money that goes to vital community programs,” she said.
People can still respond online to complete the census, by phone, or mailing in their questionnaire. Find more information on how to complete the census here.
COVID-19 has shortened the window for the census count which is expected to be completed by Sept. 30.
