Affordable housing is not easy to find in San Joaquin County, but new incentives for landlords could help low-income renters. The incentives range from guaranteed rental income to paying bonuses for leasing.
San Joaquin County, the local Housing Authority, and the city of Stockton are partnering to bring housing to veterans and low-income households.
The Housing Authority already helps over 4,000 people with rental assistance but another 400 families with vouchers are still looking for a place to rent.
County Supervisor Kathy Miller says the incentives being offered include security deposit assistance, starting utility service, and guaranteed rent through September of 2023.
“This isn't ‘trust us and we’ll reimburse you later,’” she said. “These are upfront dollars. This is guaranteed money that our landlords can count on for the foreseeable future.”
The Housing Authority is also receiving 232 additional emergency vouchers from the federal government worth over $2 million a year, but that’s money it would lose if not used. Housing Authority Director Peter Ragsdale says the county has a shortage of 24,000 affordable units, based on income.
