The city of Sacramento will open two temporary warming centers starting Thursday night to provide shelter for homeless residents and those without heat as a cold front arrives.
The warming centers will be located at:
- City Hall Lobby, 915 I St., will be open Thursday and Friday night (Dec. 9 and 10) from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
- The Hagginwood Community Center, at 3271 Marysville Blvd., will be open Friday night (Dec. 10) from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The National Weather Service expects “near freezing overnight lows” Friday morning and Saturday morning, with low temps in the upper 20s and lower 30s. It issued a frost advisory for the Sacramento Valley, Delta, Northern San Joaquin Valley and adjacent foothills for early Friday morning.
Both shelter locations have covered, protected outdoor space that can accommodate pets in kennels or crates, according to a city news release.
“We are working with our non-profits and others to communicate with people experiencing homelessness to make sure they know that these respite centers are an option for them,” Bridgette Dean, director of the Department of Community Response, said in the release. “The City has about 1,100 beds in various settings for people experiencing homelessness, but they are currently full, and the respite centers offer an alternative to those most vulnerable during this cold weather event.”
Advocates for homeless residents in Sacramento have pushed for local officials to open respite centers permanently to keep people safe, something Mayor Darrell Steinberg has also called for. Currently, there are no permanent respite centers.
