After several explosions rattled Oak Park and nearby South Sacramento neighborhoods this month, police say they’ve arrested a suspect for allegedly setting-off pipe bombs in the community.
On Saturday, the Sacramento Police Department booked a 23-year-old suspect on felony charges after they found two active pipe bombs in Oak Park, along with evidence that the suspect also detonated explosions near 19th Avenue and 32nd Street.
The arrest comes after two vehicle explosions this month that startled neighbors across South Sacramento and sparked concerns from users on sites like NextDoor and Reddit.
The first car blast occurred on January 23. That Sunday night, police say they discovered an empty vehicle with “significant damage consistent with an explosion occurring inside” near 14th Avenue and 34th Street in Oak Park.
Nearly a week later, on January 27, police responded to another explosion near 20th Avenue and 32nd Street. Officers found another empty vehicle with damage from what appeared to be a separate bomb going off inside the car.
After an investigation, police say homemade devices caused the two explosions. There were no reported injuries due to the blasts, according to the police department.
Before Saturday’s arrest, City Council member Jay Schenirer called the two explosions “suspicious” and assured residents that law enforcement was investigating.
