Highway 50 is back open in both directions after crews blew up a cabin-sized boulder that fell on the highway Thursday night.
US-50 had been closed in both directions since 6 p.m. Thursday night. Workers drilled into the massive rocks to insert dynamite before blowing the pieces away and clearing them from the road Friday.
Even with the boulder cleared, traffic may still be delayed due to a forecasted snowstorm. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory, predicting hazardous mountain trail conditions, and encourages travelers to stay home from Friday afternoon through at least Saturday morning.
It’s predicted that there will be 4 to 8 inches of snow over higher peaks about 4,000 feet and 1 to 4 inches above 2,500 feet.
Caltrans suggests drivers winterize their cars by ensuring tires are properly inflated with a good tread and to bring water, blankets, snacks, flashlights and a full tank of gas before mountain travel.
