CapRadio is thrilled to introduce two new voices to our live news audience, ushering in a new era for the Sacramento region’s radio scene.
Chris Campbell will become the voice of Sacramento’s sunrise as our local host of public radio’s signature show, Morning Edition. He comes to CapRadio from Detroit’s NPR station, WDET, where he hosted a global electronic music show, and wrote and produced music features locally and for NPR. Chris is as comfortable before large crowds as he is in a studio; he’s emceed community town halls, Detroit Symphony Orchestra performances and the Aretha Franklin Ampitheatre’s summer concert series. He succeeds Donna Apidone, who “graduated” at the end of August after 21 years in the host’s chair.
“Radio is such an empowering medium in the way it touches people on an emotional level,” Chris says. “CapRadio has been a benchmark that keeps the community informed and connected. I’m so honored to be a part of this amazing institution.”
Laura West will greet CapRadio News listeners during the midday hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Her professional media experience includes stints at Channel 10, Entercom and Educational Media Foundation in various news and music roles. Her lived experience encompasses so much more: She was born in the Philippines, grew up in Sacramento and spent her high school years on the Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona.
“I'm so pumped that I get to work at CapRadio,” Laura says. “For decades, this station and NPR's offerings have helped shape and inspire me.”
“Chris and Laura each bring great warmth, vibrancy and humanity to the airwaves,” says Ben Adler, director of programming and audience development at CapRadio. “They’ll be there with you in the moment as you listen — offering a steady presence on a tough news day and sharing a laugh after a funny story. We couldn’t be more excited for you to spend your weekdays with them.”
CapRadio News listeners will hear Chris and Laura on the air periodically over the next few weeks before they move into their permanent time slots.
