The City of Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter is waiving all pet adoption fees through Sunday to help clear its packed kennels.
More than 200 animals were available at the shelter as of Thursday, Communications Manager Ryan Hinderman said.
“We do things like this promotion to encourage people who have been thinking about adding a new pet into their life to just give them that little extra push to come down and meet an animal and fall in love,” Hinderman said.
Getting a dog vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered at a veterinarian can cost between $500 and $800, but those services are included in the free adoptions, he added. The shelter is also offering adopters $250 vouchers for Veterinary Centers of America hospitals. Hinderman said adopters can spend it on wellness checks, exams or medications they might need for their new pets.
Cats and dogs in volunteer foster homes are available for adoption, too. There were about 740 animals in foster homes as of Tuesday, the day before the shelter’s free adoption promotion began. Foster volunteers can give advice on a pet’s personality and help with the matchmaking process, Hinderman said.
The shelter typically hits points of overcapacity shortly after the Fourth of July as well as in November and February, Hinderman said.
“Pretty much all the other shelters are going through this exact same struggle right now of just too many animals and not enough homes and running out of space,” Hinderman said. “It's tough times for everybody in sheltering right now.”
Animals available for adoption, both at the shelter and in foster homes, are listed online. The shelter is open from noon to 5 p.m. every day and welcomes walk-ins.
