The Sacramento City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved plans to build a new neighborhood with 1,106 housing units near a South Sacramento light rail station.
Officials praised the Stone Beetland project, noting it didn’t face opposition like other large developments have, such as from community groups or labor unions.
Council member Mai Vang said the most exciting aspect of the project is how it will connect to the Detroit neighborhood, which currently has one way in and out.
“If you take a look at the plan, it also has several bike lanes as well and trails that’s gonna really allow for that connectivity,” Vang said. “Which is something that South Sacramento doesn’t really have.”
Next steps for the project include obtaining building permits and beginning construction. The plans approved Tuesday do not include an estimated completion date.

The Sacramento City Council on Tuesday will hold a public hearing on plans to build 1,106 new homes near a South Sacramento light rail station.
The development, called the Stone Beetland project, would include 198 affordable housing units, according to a city staff report.
It would be located on 140 acres of vacant land northeast of Cosumnes River Boulevard and 24th Street. The site is just west of the Morrison Creek light rail station and east of the Delta Shores community.
The project calls for a mix of single-family homes along with apartments, commercial and open space plus pedestrian and bike paths. Specifically, it would include a park and a 33-acre “open space network with a mix of public and semi-public spaces,” the report said.
About two-thirds of the homes would be within half a mile of the light-rail station.

In a letter to the city, members of the Detroit Community Association expressed overall support for Stone Beetland, saying it offers “new and diverse housing options, including transit-oriented development.”
But they also urged the city and project developers to ensure traffic calming measures are put in place. The Detroit Boulevard community is located directly north of the new housing site.
The council will consider the project during its 5 p.m. meeting on Tuesday.
