If you’re stumped on what to do with your Christmas tree after the holidays, you might want to look into recycling it.
There’s a few ways you can recycle your Christmas tree for free. In Sacramento, recipients of the city’s leaf season service can leave up to five trees in their leaf pile for pick up.
For residents who don’t receive the service, city officials recommend delivering Christmas trees to any of their free drop-off locations, which are listed on their website. Most locations will accept trees for recycling into early January.
In most areas, residents must remove ornaments and other decorations from trees before recycling it. But some cities may have additional restrictions.
In West Sacramento, residents can’t recycle flocked trees — which are trees covered in an artificial powder that looks like snow. Additionally, West Sacramento will not accept trees larger than five feet tall. City officials recommend residents with larger trees either cut it into segments, drop it off at a recycling location or contact the local Cub Scout troop offering a pick-up service.
But flocking and the size of a tree is not a problem for other areas, like in Sacramento.
“We don’t have any restrictions for the holiday trees themselves except that they need to be removed of all lights, tinsel … any nails, decorations, any plastic or metal,” said Jesa David, a spokesperson for the City of Sacramento’s recycling and solid waste division.
Officials recommend looking up restrictions for free Christmas tree recycling in your area to learn more about your options — as well as how to recycle them correctly.
