Temperatures in Sacramento through the rest of this week and into the weekend will be in the mid-90s, one of the region’s first hot spells heading into the summer.
The National Weather Service classifies this wave as moderate heat risk. Antoinette Serrato with the weather service said the people most at risk of heat-related illness are those without reliable access to water or air conditioning.
“You should be just aware of the heat and then make sure to check in on elderly people and children to see if they might need some extra hydration or cooler temperatures,” she said.
She advises people to keep hydrated, wear sun protection and look before they lock their car. Officials are also asking people to avoid fast-moving waterways as streams and rivers are still very cold from snowmelt.
Thursday’s forecast also includes elevated fire risk due to breezy winds and low humidity.
Serrato said the weather service will urge more precaution when temperatures are hotter and stay high for longer, with little overnight relief.
“Advisories and watches and warnings, those will come once your chances for heat risk go above moderate and into major and extreme,” she said.
That could come sooner than later, as the weather service is currently forecasting possible 100-degree days between June 4-8.
