Brace yourself for a very hot Fourth of July in the Sacramento region
Weather forecasters are warning of hazardous heat next week in the Sacramento Valley, Northern San Joaquin Valley and surrounding foothills, with temperatures ranging from 105 to 115 and limited overnight relief.
Hot weather isn't unusual during the Sacramento summer. But Chris Hintz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento, said this much heat is not typical for early July.
"This is normal a little early,” Hintz said. “There's a potential that we're going to see some record heat set next week. It's been hotter in the past but this is definitely an event that people need to pay attention to."
The weather service has issued an excessive heat watch from Tuesday through Friday, though it’s possible the heat will continue longer.
“That's not clear right now,” Hintz said. “It’s tough to say whether the ridge is going to build back up again or whether it's going to weaken. But right now it's still well above normal through the weekend.”
Hintz said people should take precautions like avoiding being out in the hottest part of the day, staying hydrated and checking in on those who are more susceptible to heat related illnesses, like children and the elderly.
The heat will also come with increased risks of wildfires on Monday and Tuesday, with winds gusting from the north from 20 to 30 mph.
