Support from California’s Democratic National Convention delegates came trickling in for Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday after President Joe Biden announced he would drop out of the race. They echo several elected leaders, including Governor Gavin Newsom.
The state’s Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks said he’s seeing a lot of excitement from elected officials and delegates, but will wait for instructions from the national party before making an official endorsement.
“I think she’s got significant support, certainly here in California,” he said.
He added that he thinks she would make an “outstanding” candidate.
“Certainly, I’ve been telling everyone that I’ve been interacting with that she’d make an outstanding nominee,” he said. “I haven’t had to tell too many people that before they’ve told me.”
Shanna Ingalsbee is co-chair for the California Democratic Party’s platform committee and a delegate to the DNC, and she said she was relieved to hear of the change in ticket.
“The chaos and the uncertainty has caused a lot of anxiety among the Democrats, and frankly among anyone who wants to defeat Donald Trump,” she said.
Bay Area Lawyer Tom McInerney will also serve as a delegate. He was stunned to hear Biden was stepping down, but thinks Harris is the right candidate.
“I think she could really unite the Democratic party with a lot of enthusiasm. I think there’s gonna be just a ton of energy now,” he said.
Newsom, who was also a rumored potential backup candidate, endorsed Harris on Sunday. So did California senators Alex Padilla and Laphonza Butler, as well as representatives Ami Bera and Adam Schiff.
The Democratic Convention will take place August 19 through 22 in Chicago.
