This week the California Legislature passed ten crime bills that are now headed to the Governor’s desk, and with them, Democrats are presenting an alternative to Proposition 36.
The ten bills that passed include several which increase penalties for retail theft.
Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said he supports the bills over Proposition 36, which would also create stronger penalties for theft by making changes to Proposition 47 and will be on the November ballot.
“I prefer the legislative process because it's a process where we can engage, where we can amend certain aspects of the work that we do, where we can course correct,” he said.
Assembly Democratic Caucus Chair Rick Chavez Zbur from Los Angeles sponsored a bill that would provide higher penalties for shoplifting, saying it was written with business owners and advocates for criminal justice reforms in mind.
“This bill makes California safer and does its best to maintain criminal justice reforms that have been so important,” he said.
The package also includes a bill that would make it a crime to forcibly enter a vehicle, even if it’s unlocked. Another would add verification requirements for third-party sellers on websites like Amazon.
