The California Legislature is eyeing a new way to get young people to vote.
Lawmakers are sending a bill to the Governor’s desk requiring schools to give students information on how to get pre-registered.
The bill says school districts would have to do it before students finish their junior year of high school, starting with the 2026-2027 school year. If a student or parent asks how to get a registration card, the district will have to explain that, too.
Pre-registration rates are pretty low in the state – only about 13% of eligible teens are registered. In California, teens ages 16 and 17 can pre-register to vote at registertovote.ca.gov. Those who do will have their registration become active once they turn 18.
