More Californians will soon have access to fertility treatment insurance coverage — including in vitro fertilization — after Governor Gavin Newsom made the final decision on some health-related bills over the weekend.
Newsom signed a bill that requires insurance providers to cover infertility diagnoses and services. Right now, they only have to make those services available.
The bill also expands that treatment to LGBTQ+ families. It doesn’t apply to Medicaid.
The new law comes as IVF treatment in particular faces pushback in other states.
“As Republicans across the country continue to claw back rights and block access to IVF – all while calling themselves ‘the party of families’ – we are proud to help every Californian make their own choices about the family they want,” Governor Gavin Newsom said in a press release.
Newsom also vetoed a bill that would’ve given more people access to treatment for menopause symptoms.
The bill would have prevented insurance companies from denying coverage of some common care.
In his veto message, the governor said the bill’s restrictions were too far-reaching.
