Today we celebrate the 80th birthday (which is actually tomorrow, April 17) of Dr Adolphus Hailstork, composer and Professor of Music and Eminent Scholar at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.
He has studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, at the Manhattan School of Music and received his doctorate in composition from Michigan State University.
With compositions recorded as early as 1976, Dr Hailstork continues to write meaningful music such as "Rise For Freedom," an opera about the Underground Railroad in 2007; "I Speak of Peace," in honor of (and featuring the words of) President John F. Kennedy; and he is currently working on his Fourth Symphony, and "A Knee on a Neck," a tribute to George Floyd for chorus and orchestra.
