Joaquín Rodrigo in 1960 | photo by Juan Gyenes
Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo was so revered in his home country that he was elevated to nobility in 1991 by King Juan Carlos I and given the title Marqués de los Jardines de Aranjuez (Marquis of the Gardens of Aranjuez). That title, of course, a reference to Rodrigo's most famous composition, the Concierto de Aranjuez.
From 1940, the Concierto was inspired by the gardens at Palacio Real de Aranjuez, the palace built by Philip II in the last half of the 16th century (and rebuilt in the 18th century).
The adagio is probably the most famous movement of the Concierto. It's been used in countless movies, TV shows and commercials. It's also been covered by other musicians, including Miles Davis.
Let the music transport you to the palacio's fragrant gardens with the entire Concierto de Aranjuez at 2:00pm today on CapRadio.
