Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) in 1894.
Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner were held in esteem by followers as representative of two different philosophies of music. Wagner the progressive of the "New German School" with program music telling some kind of story, and Brahms the traditionalist practicing absolute music that didn't need to be "about" anything.
Though Wagner died nearly a year before Brahms premiered his Symphony #3 in late 1883, soldiers in this battle were still fighting. Proponents of Wagnerian ideology actually showed up at the concert hall and tried to interfere with the Brahms premiere. Enthusiasts on both "sides" nearly came to blows.
Is one approach "better" than the other? Need anyone even pick a side? As for Brahms, hear his Symphony #3 today at 2:00pm on CapRadio.
