Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1880. Source: Library of Congress
Tchaikovsky had a lifelong admiration of Shakespeare and also composed music based on The Tempest and Hamlet. It also may be that the doomed love of Romeo and Juliet resonated with his own tortured personal life. But it was actually a suggestion by fellow composer Mily Balakirev that Tchaikovsky should write a piece based on the fateful young lovers of Verona; he even suggested a plan of structure for the piece as he saw that a recent composition, that Tchaikovsky dedicated to him, was put together "in a very slapdash manner [with] clumsy stitching... The whole thing is completely uncoordinated." So Tchaikovsky somewhat followed Balakirev's suggestions and created a classic that doesn't musically re-tell the story, but conveys characters, moods and ideas from Shakespeare.
We'll air the drama, romance and brilliant melodies of Tchaikovsky's Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture at 2:00pm today on CapRadio Music.
And looking forward to the Academy Awards on Sunday, you'll also hear an hour of movie music starting at 6pm. Cinema scores by John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, Tan Dun and more, from movies such as Star Wars, Schindler’s List, Black Panther, The Godfather, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Da 5 Bloods, and others.
