Tchaikovsky wrote three ballets; unfortunately none of which really “hit” until after his death. His first was Swan Lake which premiered in 1877 and was met with lukewarm praise at best. Reports from the time place blame on the lousy choreography (a masterpiece production was choreographed two years after his death) but Tchaikovsky blamed himself and intended to re-write the music AND create a suite; neither of which he ever did. Others later assembled Suites of the music, and you’ll hear the Chicago Symphony Orchestra perform a Swan Lake Suite at 2:00pm today.
