Iosif Kotek and Tchaikovsky in 1877
Tchaikovsky’s only Violin Concerto came out of relationships both awful and ideal. Escaping his doomed-from-the-start marriage, Tchaikovsky sought refuge at Lake Geneva in Switzerland in March 1878. Within days, his former student, friend and quite possibly more than that, the young violinist Iosif Kotek, arrived at his door. They relaxed and played music together, and Tchaikovsky immediately conceived of writing a violin concerto. Daily, young Kotek gave advice on violin writing, and he played each page of the score after Tchaikovsky wrote it. The Concerto was completed within weeks. Hoping to avoid gossip, Tchaikovsky dedicated the Concerto not to Kotek but to the famous violinist Leopold Auer, who later taught it to his student Jascha Heifetz, who you can hear play it at 2:00pm today on CapRadio Music.
