Beethoven originally intended to dedicate his third symphony to Napoleon and the great man that he had shown promise to become. But when Napoleon turned out to be more of a tyrant, Beethoven instead dedicated his symphony to “the memory of a great man.” That could be the heroic greatness that anyone could exhibit. The “Heroic” or “Eroica” Symphony #3 by Beethoven at 2:00pm today. [Just for fun: points for you if you recognize from what movie this image of the LP was taken. Trivia: it's a fictional orchestra and conductor.]
