A still from the 1933 Russian film Lieutenant Kije (Поручик Киже)
Lieutenant Kijé is a character created by a bureaucratic administrative error yet admirers inflate this non-existent military man's reputation to the point that the emperor promotes the exemplary officer to General and requests his appearance. When he can't be found, the emperor is told he has died. (An episode of the TV show "M*A*S*H" based an episode ("Tuttle") on this story.) This satire on bureaucracy was made into a 1934 Russian film for which Sergei Prokofiev composed the score. He actually spent much more time to make his famous Lieutenant Kijé Suite based on music from the film because the musical cues for the movie were so brief. Hear the tuneful Suite at 2:00pm today on CapRadio Music.
