Though Gabriel Fauré was a religious skeptic, his beautiful Requiem is nonetheless based on the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead. However, he did omit the full Dies irae sequence and retained only its Pie Jesu, and the final movement, in Paradisum, is sung as the body is taken from the church to burial. The result is a serene “lullaby of death” as Fauré described it and the entire work, “is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.” After his first version in 1888, Fauré continued to revise the work. In 1893 he added additional text plus bassoons, horns and trumpets. He also made an expanded arrangement for full orchestra in 1900 though this seemed against his intention to keep the work more quiet and serene. He never renounced this version, though, saying it was appropriate for certain concert situations. The full orchestral version was performed at Fauré’s own funeral in 1924. You’ll hear the 1893 version today at 2:00pm on CapRadio Music.
