George Gershwin was born and lived between two worlds and served as a bridge between them. In early 20th century America, jazz was in the driver's seat while classical moved to the back or was at least turning down a different road. Written the year after his "Rhapsody In Blue," Gershwin's 1925 Piano Concerto in F was, at the time, called a "jazz concerto" by critics and audiences. But Gershwin noted that its form was classical but "attempted to utilize certain jazz rhythms worked out along more or less symphonic lines." With its Charleston rhythm, blues nocturne, sonata form and classical rondo, Gershwin brought together two worlds trying to move apart. Hear his Piano Concerto in F today at 2:00pm on CapRadio Music.
