1803 Portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven by Christian Hornemann
Like a cat sneaking up on its prey before pouncing, Beethoven’s Symphony #4 quietly lurks for about 2-½ minutes before energetically bursting forth into sunlight and melody. It’s a composition for which he interrupted work on his trailblazing Symphony #5 to knock out for a commission from a wealthy count who wanted something rather conservative, somewhat in the style of Haydn. Beethoven’s 4th Symphony may not be revolutionary or heroic, but it certainly is cheerful and full of good humor and would be considered a masterwork from any average composer. Hear it at 2:00pm today on CapRadio Music.
