Mozart at about age 21 (1777)
The “Dissonance” nickname for Mozart’s String Quartet #19 is apparent from its opening notes, an unusually dark landscape of the higher strings searching for their way against a steady pulsating heartbeat from the cello. Until, a couple minutes in, the light suddenly shines and the music finds its way. Then it's a genial and even cheeky journey toward the good cheer of the final movement, one of Mozart’s most famous and infectious quartet movements. Hear the entire journey of Mozart's String Quartet #19 at 2:00pm today.
