Danish composer Niels Gade circa 1850
19th century Danish composer Niels Gade was the most important musician in Denmark in his day. He composed in many forms including eight symphonies. Much of his music included Nordic folk elements. But after accepting an invitation from Felix Mendelssohn to co-manage concerts at the Leipzig Gewandhaus (which turned into a five year stay), Gade listened to Germanic advice to lose the nationalistic folk flavor and the absence of it reached its peak in Gade’s Symphony #4 and because of this the symphony received mixed reviews. Some had come to expect the Nordic flavor from Gade, while others praised the more Germanic “universal” sound without it. You’re darned if you do, darned if you don’t. Hear the Symphony #4 by Gade today at 2:00pm and decide for yourself.
