Czech composer Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony #8 has been called his equivalent to Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony #6. Written in the summer and early autumn of 1889 at his summer home in the Bohemian countryside, Dvořák’s Eighth expresses rejuvenation from communion with nature, its changing moods and the cycles of life (not just pastoral), and the charms of the composer’s beloved folk music. Dvořák conducted the premiere in Prague in early 1890, then soon after in England where it was such a resounding success each movement received applause more thunderous than the previous movement until, after the finale, Dvořák described the reception as almost unbearable. Take a musical break in the Bohemian woods with Dvořák’s Symphony #8 at 2:00pm today on CapRadio Music.
