Classical Music Playlist, June 7, 2021
Among the instruments that Johannes Brahms learned to play as a child were the piano, violin and natural (valveless) horn (which his father also played). Soon after the death of his mother while in his 30s he composed a trio with those same instruments; reminiscences, some say, of his childhood with father, mother, and early music lessons surrounded by family. But the slow third movement interrupts with a profoundly sad elegy for mother before the music works its way through the stages of grief to end with acceptance and hope. Hear the cheerful and profound Horn Trio in E-Flat from Johannes Brahms at 2:00pm today on CapRadio.
