The Symphony #1 by Sergei Rachmaninoff had a disastrous premiere performance. It was led by a great composer who was apparently a lousy conductor: Alexander Glazunov. Not only did he not really know what he was doing, he also gave the symphony very little rehearsal and, it’s been said, that he was drunk on the podium. The whole experience devastated Rachmaninoff so badly that for three years he composed nothing else until after months of visits to a doctor who helped him through hypnosis. Finally, Rachmaninoff emerged from his funk with his spectacularly successful Piano Concerto #2, but writing symphonies still intimidated him. He didn’t compose his Second Symphony for another ten years, and his final symphony, his Third, until 28 years after the Second. Today at 2:00 pm hear the Symphony #1 that after Rachmaninoff’s death (and in other conductors’ hands) has been hailed a triumph.
