By the time Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D in 1806 he had already composed his 3rd Symphony, his 4th Piano Concerto and important piano sonatas like the “Waldstein” and “Appassionata.” The Violin Concerto, however, had an unsuccessful premiere and then languished, unplayed, for decades (until after Beethoven’s death in 1827). It wasn’t until Felix Mendelssohn conducted it in London in 1844 featuring the 12 year old - later legendary - violinist Joseph Joachim that the Concerto would become a standard in the violin concerto repertoire. Making it notable are that it is longer than any composer’s earlier violin concerto, uses a larger orchestra for a concerto than ever before, and the solo violin part is exceedingly difficult. The first movement alone is over 25 minutes with a lengthy orchestral introduction that presents the melodic themes before the violin enters to explore them. The second movement is lovely and lyrical while the finale supplies a charming folk-dance exuberance. Beethoven’s great Violin Concerto is your Midday Masterpiece today at 2:00pm.
