"Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer" (Wanderer above the Sea of Fog) | c. 1818 by Caspar David Friedrich
"An Alpine Symphony" by Richard Strauss is scored for a massive orchestra of well over 100 musicians including wind and thunder machines, all to evoke the journey (somewhat autobiographical of an adventure at age 15) of a hike up an Alpine mountain from daybreak and encountering along the way a forest, stream, waterfall, hunters, shepherds (listen for cowbells!) and more all before reaching the summit, where an awe-inspiring panorama awards the adventurer. Then a thunderstorm, a descent (and all the previous sights briefly heard again in reverse order) before arriving back at the mountain's base at sundown. It’s an exhilarating exercise and trip into nature as today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00pm on CapRadio Music.
