American composer Samuel Barber began work on his First Symphony in 1935 when he was 25, which he would eventually call his “Symphony in One Movement” (though internally it’s structured like four movements). He worked on this while his life partner, Gian Carlo Menotti, simultaneously was at work on his own opera “Amelia Goes to the Ball.” They lived and worked on these separate compositions in the US (Philadelphia and Maine), and throughout Europe including Rome, Vienna, on a lake near Salzburg and on the French Riviera (Roquebrune). The symphony had its premiere in Rome in December 1936 and, after they both returned to the US, in January of 1937 the symphony had its American premiere in Cleveland and soon after at Carnegie Hall. Barber dedicated the Symphony to Menotti, who soon finished his opera which had its premiere in April 1937 in Barber’s hometown of Philadelphia. The Barber Symphony #1 is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm, followed by the Overture to Menotti’s opera “Amelia Goes to the Ball” at about 2:22pm.
