Violinist Pablo de Sarasate
Today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm is Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole from 1874 that he composed for, and perhaps in consultation with, the great Spanish violin virtuoso of the time, Pablo de Sarasate. It’s really more of a Concerto with Spanish motifs throughout, and had the good luck to have premiered during a vogue for Spanish music in Europe and just a month before Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen” with its rich and tuneful Spanish color. It’s also documented in Tchaikovsky's own letters that he admired Lalo’s Concerto Symphonie and seems to have inspired him to compose his own famous Violin Concerto. Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers is the soloist with Spanish conductor Jesus Lopez-Cobos conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at 2:00 pm today on CapRadio Music.
