Max Bruch’s “Scottish Fantasy” is one of his most popular and enduring compositions. But unlike Felix Mendelssohn, whose 3rd Symphony was inspired by wandering through Scotland and picking up the feel of the place firsthand, Max Bruch got melodies for his “Fantasy” out of a book in a German library and it wasn’t until the year after the premiere of this work that he finally visited Scotland for the first time! Max Bruch’s “Scottish Fantasy,” featuring violinist Joshua Bell, is your Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm today.
